How the event started

Started in the late 1980's by the Brechin Road Runners this race followed much the same route as the new race but with a different access to the White Caterthun and therefore a slightly shorter distance of 11.5 miles.

The race gradually gained in popularity from a couple of dozen runners on the first outing to several hundred before stopping in the mid 1990's due to the untimely death of one of the main organisers and the subsequent break-up of the Brechin Road Runners as a club.

As with most of these types of race, there was a loyal group of supporters who took part and came back year after year to try and better their time or in my case, actually manage to finish the race.

It is with great thanks to the members of the Brechin Road runners that I got hooked on long distance running, having started with the White Caterthun Race I then prpgressed to the "Highland Cross" and finally marathon running.
